The official diagnosis is Ovarian Cancer, Stage III C. Each stage has three degrees A, B, or C (with C being the worst). The staging was determined by both the spread of the cancer (including a mass on the omentum larger than 2cm) and the fact that an initial fluid-flush of the abdomen revealed free-floating cancer cells. It is "high-grade serous" cancer, which is the most common type, and therefore has proven standard methods of treatment.
The standard treatment will include six 3-week cycles of chemo. There are two chemo approaches we are deciding between, but the side effects for both are manageable. Mom will be getting her port put in as early as next week and chemo will likely start the week after that.
Mom, and all the rest of us here, are feeling optimistic about the plan of action. We even had a few humorous moments during the meeting with the doctor. You see, the sweet Dr. Lee was trying to convince Mom to make an appointment with the colo-rectal surgeon. "He would like to have some closure and do his own exam...he's very anal." Poor Dr. Lee, who did not intend the off-color pun, was no match for the four of us (Megan, Lindsay, Mom, and Aunt Teri) with our 7th grade mentality.
Love you all for loving Mom so much!
